Whitehorse 2007 a Great Success!

What began as the dream of a few turned into the success of all Canada’s North. The 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, which ran from February 23 to March 10, 2007, proved that the North can put on one heck of a show.

The Whitehorse Canada Winter Games, which are being hailed as the best ever, were a great opportunity for not only the Yukon, but for all three territories to promote the beauty and culture of Canada’s North.  A combination of world class venues, dedicated volunteers and the natural beauty of Canada’s northern territories provided Canada’s athletes, media and other Games time visitors with a stunning look at the cultural riches and the vast beauty of the north.

The sport competitions themselves were worth the trip as the nation’s top amateur athletes competed in 22 sports, many of them in below average competition temperatures. Spectators were wowed by the hard hitting action of the hockey competitions, the speed and grace of the cross-country skiing races and the precision and poise exhibited by the biathletes and the archers.

In all, 3600 athletes, coaches and managers who had worked and trained for years to get to Whitehorse lived their dreams over two weeks of exciting and intense competition. Records were broken, heroes crowned and Canada’s next wave of international champions emerged. The 2007 Canada Winter Games will go down in history as one of the biggest and best events ever to take place north of the 60th parallel. The North played proud host to the rest of the nation and hopes the Games will inspire others to host their events in Canada’s territories.
