Huge Opportunities
Look up North and discover a booming economy, a welcoming community, a developed infrastructure and an unbeatable way of life. Look up to the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut for opportunities you won’t find anywhere else.
Yukon’s natural resources sectors have been hailed as the next Gold Rush for investors. The territory benefits from more than 4,800 kilometres of all-weather roads, easy access to two ice-free ports and is closer to Asia than BC. For now, tourism is Yukon’s largest private sector employer, creating revenues of some $185 million from more than 300,000 visitors a year.
Business in the Northwest Territories is looking good. Mining, oil and natural gas, construction, tourism, forestry and fisheries are all key contributors to the territory’s GDP which was $3.8 billion in 2005. The territory’s scheduled marine service extends more than 5,000 kilometres, linking the entire Mackenzie River and Arctic Ocean to Canada’s rail and highway system.
Noted worldwide for its arts and cultural industries, mineral exploration and fisheries also contribute significantly to Nunavut’s economy. Mineral exploitation expenditures approached $200 million in 2006, up from $35 million in 1999. Nunavut’s first diamond mine opened in 2006 and the territory’s Atlantic fisheries have a landed value in excess of $100 million.
